Board Game of the Month - 7 Wonders Duel
Each Month at Game On, we will turn our focus on an awesome new Board Game. This month, February 2016, will be the awesome 2 player game - 7 Wonders Duel!
7 Wonders Duel is a fantastic choice for February as it's a great game for 2 players, so it's a perfect choice for date night. If you don't already have a big heart on your calendar for Valentine's Day, then please let me remind you that it is February 14th! And remember that a romantic evening for two can be perfectly highlighted by board games. There are a ton of great choices for two player games out there and we took a long look at many different titles before settling on 7 Wonders Duel for our main pick this month. Our reason? Quite simply - we can't stop playing it!
With many couples looking for new and exciting things to do together, a simple choice is being overlooked on a regular basis. Board games are a fantastic choice for families, friends, individuals and couples! At Game On, we know that a great game can bring a couple together as they bond over playing the game. We've seen it happen time and time again in the store and as couples come back for more games to play at home. Board games are a great alternative to the some of the most common dating rituals as it forces conversation and interaction between the people playing. An unexpected benefit to the board game date is the ability to simply stay home and be close with the one you love. Whether it's your first date, been together for months or celebrating a 50 year anniversary, board games can be an excellent way to spend the time together.
7 Wonders Duel hasn't been out that long but is already one of our top suggested games and one that is based off of a multiple award winning title called 7 Wonders. The original 7 Wonders is better suited for larger gatherings while 7 Wonders Duel is all about the two player game and since we are talking about couples this February - our focus is on 7 Wonders Duel. In 7 Wonders Duel, players develop science and armies, build prestigious buildings and lead their civilization to victory! This is accomplished by card drafting, using resources and collecting cards that work together. For those new to board game terms, card drafting is a game term that basically means you and your opponent will take turns picking cards from those that become available during your turn. As a player drafts cards, they get the chance to use resources available to them from previous cards they have taken to gain full advantage of the cards they choose. Sometimes a choice is made because its a great fit for what you've already picked and sometimes it is picked because you just don't want your opponent to snatch it! Timing and bonuses come into play as players take turns trying to win the game in three different ways. Because of the variation of how to win and never knowing what you might get next in the card draft assures that you'll want to play the game again and again. We've found that a lot of games come down to the final moments, which also keeps the gameplay very exciting throughout. Clocking in at about 30 minutes of game before someone emerges a victor keeps the fun short and contained if you don't have much time to play or it can be a wonderful lead into other activities for the night. Often times, I find that a quick 30 minute game can set the evening off just right to go out for dinner or a movie and 7 Wonders Duel fits that perfectly. It also has solid replay value so it can also work to play it multiple times as the 'main event' for the evening. Either way you go, it's a great game for having a wonderful time!
We've talked a lot about how 7 Wonders Duel is a great game for couples, but don't let that distract you from challenging friends! 7 Wonders Duel is ultimately a fun game that 2 people can enjoy anytime a free 30 minutes is available.
