A Gaggle of Geeks
So you may have asked yourself if you made it into Game On McCook this last Saturday - what was going on? The building was completely packed with people playing Magic the Gathering, and I was in the thick of it - surprised by the turnout and having a blast. Fresh off of Oath of the Gatewatch release, we decided to run a tournament to give away over a few boxes worth of prizes to all the players that come out and support their local game store. Or if you had came by earlier in the day you may have noticed that there were a bunch of people playing in one of our first large Pokemon prerelease events. This isn't the end of all the fun to be had yet this year, oh no the tournaments are only just beginning.
Surely the largest events that have been happening since the start of the year have been primarily magic related, and Oath of the Gatewatch game day hasn't even arrived yet. With a beautiful play mat that has the art of the card, Zendikar Resurgent from the new Oath of the Gatewatch set, it is a desired play mat by any magic player. This February 13th and 14th you have a chance to win one. In the McCook, Kearney, and North Platte locations the game day events will be starting at one o'clock with a small five dollar entry fee. This is instantly mitigated by the fact that you get a full art Immolating Glare and top eight gets a foil full art Jori En, Ruin Diver to throw into a commander, tiny leader, standard or whatever deck you wish. Lets not forget that first place gets the lovely play mat to brag about for months to come. It even has the word champion stamped across it.
If Pokemon is still piquing your interest then I urge you to remember that every weekend we host Pokemon events in all three stores. Check our weekly schedules for details to join! From the old first generation of Pokemon to the newest set BREAKpoint it is still great fun to sit down and play some cards against someone else. All ages are welcome and we have a variety of ages that show up every single week. One of my favorite things about the events is you can also challenge someone with your Pokemon on your 3DS as well, but you still can't beat pulling a foil EX in real life. Even if you are just curious about Pokemon, please stop in, I know first hand you'll enjoy it. After all, it's Pokemon's 20th Anniversary this year and Game On will be doing lots of cool events to celebrate.
Now if you enjoyed Star Wars this last December and want to get your fix - have I got a game for you! Star Wars X-Wing is also going to be having a big tournament soon. The store championship is happening at the end of this month on February 28th in the Kearney store and the following weekend we will have it March fifth in McCook and sixth in North Platte. This game will have a little more in depth articles in the coming weeks detailing the three different factions - Empire, Rebels, and Scum. Now, I'm a Boba Fett man myself and will be flying scum for sure, but I'll also tell you what I personally would be running if I was to play the other two factions. The nice thing about this game is the starter set is instantly affordable to get playing and you can learn the basics in five minutes. It provides hours of fun and isn't an endless money sink like some hobbies can turn into. We have events everyweek in all three store locations, so if you want to learn how to play before the store championship stop in and we will get you a match.
Now a quick divert to the world of comics to talk about comic book league. McCook has started to host comic book league on Sunday starting at six, we have special deals on comics and fun events that take place at these meetings. Currently we have turned our focus to some of the DC comics adult coloring book variants that have been all over our shelves in the recent weeks. If you want to know about this cool contest we have going on, your just going to have to show up to get the details. In all honesty, this league has been a blast to have a place to hang out and talk like the gaggle of geeks we all are and enjoy some of the insanely awesome comics that have started recently like Monstress, Old Man Logan, Anakin and Obi-wan, and Deadpool. You have nothing to loose and the membership comes with a dinner on Sundays, so stop in or give us a call here in McCook to get into the league, it's easy.
Turning my attention to this week in articles, you can expect a fun video showing some Magic the Gathering game play. It will be fun to watch for experienced players and those that are just curious about watching how the game is played. Accompanying the video, expect some fun deck articles telling you why the decks are built that way and how they are meant to be played. Get ready to hear about the board game for the month of February, Seven Wonders Duels and to see why it has been such an entertaining time learning to play this game over the past few weeks. The most important thing to know about this coming week is there will be new articles and you should read them! We also have loved hearing the feedback you all have been giving us on how much you love the new site changes and we enjoy bringing you this new hub of entertainment and amusement to your living rooms.
In closing I'd like to say congratulations to Nick Carlson and Tanner Lytle for first and second place at the Magic the Gathering tournament on Saturday. They fought through a slew of Atarka Red, Eldrazi Ramp, Blue and Red Prowess, Abzan Aggro, Ally Tribal and many other decks to get some awesome prizes and play mats. You may ask yourself, "What are all those decks? What is a Prowess? Are Eldrazi spooky? (Maybe that's only me)." Well Keep reading this week and find out! Also congratulations to Bryce Osterman for a first place at our Pokemon prerelease event. Once more thank you for taking the time to read, share, and like these articles and I hope you have an awesome day gaming.
